BV & DGA
Doing your BV's bookkeeping yourself or outsourcing it?
What you can do yourself, where it goes wrong for most DGAs and which middle route often works best.
You are allowed to do your BV's bookkeeping yourself. An accountant is not mandatory, and micro and small BVs do not need an auditor either. Most DGAs manage the day-to-day bookkeeping with good software. The harder parts are the annual accounts in SBR format, corporate income tax and payroll. That is why many DGAs choose to book themselves with a professional checking.
What you have to arrange either way
Even if you do everything yourself, the same obligations apply: records kept for 7 years, VAT returns, a monthly payroll tax return for your DGA salary, a corporate income tax return and annual accounts filed with the KvK on time. As director you are personally responsible for these.
Three routes
| Route | What you do | What an accountant does | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everything yourself | Bookkeeping, returns, payroll, annual accounts and filing | Nothing | DGAs with financial knowledge and a simple BV |
| Book yourself, with review | Processing invoices and bank in the software | Checking, all returns, annual accounts and filing | DGAs who want to stay in control and save costs |
| Fully outsourced | Supplying documents | Everything | DGAs who want to spend their time on the business |
Where it often goes wrong
- Private expenses and the current account mixed up, so the balance sheet doesn't add up
- No customary salary, or one that is too low, for the DGA
- Annual accounts not in SBR format, or filed too late
- Paying dividend without a distribution test or resolution
- Deducting VAT on the costs of a holding without its own activities
- Depreciation, provisions and a taxable profit that differs from the commercial profit
When doing it yourself works
Doing it yourself can work if your BV is micro, has few transactions, no staff besides the DGA and no holding structure. You do need accounting software that can produce the VAT return, the corporate income tax report and SBR annual accounts. Expect a few hours a month and a few days for the year-end.
The middle route: Review
With our Review package you book in Jortt Plus yourself. We check your records and take care of the VAT returns, the annual accounts, the KvK filing and the corporate income tax return. You keep the overview and costs down, and the risky year-end work sits with a professional.
