What is a current account with my BV?

Short answer

A current account with your BV (rekening-courant) is a running account between you and your BV, recording mutual payments and debts. You may borrow money from your BV, but on arm's-length terms and with interest. If you as a DGA, together with your partner, borrow more than €500,000 from your BV, you pay box 2 tax on the excess.

If you pay a business bill privately, or withdraw money from the business account, your accountant books it to the current account. At the end of the year, it shows what you owe the BV, or the other way round.

Arm's-length terms

  • Record the arrangements in an agreement
  • Charge an arm's-length interest rate and book it every year
  • Agree a repayment schedule if the debt grows
  • Keep track of the balance in your accounts and discuss it when preparing the annual accounts

The €500,000 limit

Since 2023, the excessive borrowing act (wet excessief lenen) applies. Loans for your own home don't count, subject to conditions. On the part above €500,000 on 31 December, you pay box 2 tax as if you had received dividend.
